SC defends life imprisoned to Sobhraj

The Supreme Court (SC) upheld the life imprisonment to French national Charles Sobhraj, who attained bad name as the Serpent and Bikini Killer in 1970s, murder of an American lady back in 1975.

A joint bench of justices Ram Kumar Prasad Shah and Gauri Dhakal endorsed the verdict pronounced by Patan Appellate Court and Kathmandu District Court on Friday (July 30).

Government prosecutors have obtained Charles's former girlfriend's confession to Indian Police that he had murdered the American backpacker, Connie Joe Bronzich in 1975 in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu District Court had convicted him of the murder of Bronzich in 2004 and then the Patan Appellate court also upheld the ruling. He was arrested in 2003 from a Casino of Yak and Yeti Hotel Kathmandu.

However, Sobhraj had been denying the charge in Bronzich's murder, insisting that he had never been to Nepal before 2003. Sobhraj who is a French national born from Vietnamese mother and Indian merchant father.
